LIONSGATE CONFIRMS FOLLOW-UP FILM TO 1987 DANCE CLASSIC DIRTY DANCING WITH JENNIFER GREY

Dirty Dancing created a name for itself in the world of Hollywood when it premiered in 1987. It is the chemistry between Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze that made the romantic dance flick strike a chord with the audience. Now after 33 years, entertainment company Lionsgate has confirmed that a sequel to the hit dancing movie is in the pipeline with original cast member Jennifer Grey. Jennifer Grey portrayed the role of France “Baby” Houseman, a young woman who falls for the hotel’s dance instructor Johnny Castle during a holiday.

The Canadian entertainment company has tried to bring back the world of Dirty Dancing to the silver screen with Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights in 2004. The 2004 film follows on the lines of the original movie, but the only difference is that it was set in Cuba during the Cuban revolution.

Dirty Dancing Television Special

Dirty Dancing was also subject to a musical television remake in the year 2017. The 3-hour special aired on ABC in 2017. The Wayne Blair directed television special featured Abigail Breslin as Baby Houseman and Colt Prattes as Johnny Castle. Sara Hyland was also a part of the film and essayed the role of Lisa Houseman, Baby’s elder sister.

According to reports, one of the studio executives stated that it would be a trip back in time, a little bit nostalgic for all the fans who watched the 1987 dance flick. Jonathan Levine and Gillian Bohrer will helm the follow-up film. Tobias Iaconis and Mikki Daughtry will write the screenplay.

An Award-Winning Dance Film

The original Dirty Dancing film has won a lot of awards. So, there will be a lot of expectations from the upcoming movie after more than three decades. Dirty Dancing received the awards for best original song (I’ve Had) The Time of my life at the 60th academy awards and golden globe awards. It also won an award for Best Pop Performance by a duo at the 1988 Grammys.

The only disappointing thing about the film will be the absence of Patrick Swayze. The actor passed away in the year 2009 at the age of 57. With his absence, the makers will have to figure out a way to fill the void and build a story around a new character, i.e. if the makers plan to move forward in this particular direction.

Top Gun: Maverick is another film that will be a follow-up film to the first installment which was released in the year 1986. It is set for a release in 2021 after an initial premiere date of 26th June 2020.
